I've not been to good just recently so had to give my eyes a rest from staring at a screen. That said I really wanted to get some new ideas down so I got out a sketchbook and started scribbling these thumbnails(can't remember the last time I drew with a pencil :)).

Anyway, some of you may remember that I did something similar to these last year, the title being 'Harvest day'. I'm basically thinking about doing a repaint of the original but using one of the above images as a new starting point.

The image represents the entrance to a cave with a dragon carved out of the mountainside. The basic story behind the piece is that a great dragon is held prisoner within the cavern and used to harvest eggs, by an indigenous tribe.

(Edit) A and B finished but C needs a little more work...also I'm keeping the line work a secret, mainly because it sucked :D

Would you ever consider doing a tutorial? I'd love to see how you do some of those beautiful forests.

What, like a video tutorial?
it would be very long and quite boring I would imagine :D

Do you want advice on something in particular?

I prefer step by step screen shot tutorials myself, but really anything works. I just like watching artists and how they do their work. I wouldn't have gotten as far as I have in the computer arts if not for all the wonderful tutorials out there from so many amazing artists. I'm still developing my skills at making landscape and really I'm not very good at it. Trees are my weakness.

Don't let it bother you just keep trying to have fun with different techniques. Custom brushes are very useful for textures when working on landscapes, it's surprising how quickly something can come to life with just a few patches of texture laid over the top. The most important thing to remember is where the light is coming from. I'd try some studies from photos you've taken and you will get an idea of how light can appear in some unexpected places alongside very dark shapes...

Tip: Use lots of layers but collapse them when you're happy so you don't have lots open at the same time. I also draw between layers sometimes and turn down the opacity on others, this gives a transparent look to leaves , see what works for you :)

hope this helps :-/

Your forests are so gorgeous , the scenes you drew are of an impressive quality , and radiate vitality. It emanates a kind of soothing aura , and the atmosphere is both nostalgic , quiet , peaceful and soft. I really like the light work.  Thanks for the feels and great work !
